Whole-Home Water Filtration in San Diego & Orange County

The quick answer

Whole-home water filtration treats all the water entering your house, so every faucet, shower, and appliance gets water with less chlorine, chloramine taste, and sediment. In San Diego it is usually paired with a softener, because filtration does not remove the hardness that causes scale.

A whole-home filter is installed where the main water line enters your house, so everything downstream gets treated: showers, laundry, the kitchen tap, the ice maker, and the hose bib. Instead of buying a filter pitcher or a faucet add-on for one spot, you treat the water once, at the source.

What whole-home filtration does

What it does not do: it does not remove the calcium and magnesium that make water hard, and it is not designed to produce bottled-water-quality drinking water. Those jobs belong to a softener and a reverse osmosis system.

Why San Diego homes add it

Water across San Diego, Orange, and Riverside counties is disinfected with chlorine-based treatment (the City of San Diego uses both chlorine and chloramine). It is safe, and plenty of people can still smell and taste it, especially in the shower and in a glass of cold tap water. Our area also has some of the hardest water in the country, so most homes need to deal with hardness and disinfectant taste together. Our guide to San Diego tap water breaks down what is in the water and what each fix does.

Filtration vs. softener vs. reverse osmosis

SystemSolvesWhere it treats
Whole-home carbon filtrationChlorine and chloramine taste and odor, sedimentWhole house
Water softenerHardness: scale, spotting, dry skin, shorter appliance lifeWhole house
Salt-free conditionerChanges how minerals behave so they scale less; does not remove themWhole house
Reverse osmosisThe cleanest drinking and cooking water, including dissolved solidsKitchen sink

Most homeowners we talk to end up with a softener plus carbon filtration for the house, and reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink. If you are not sure which of these your home needs, that is exactly what the quote conversation is for. We recommend a system only if there is a real problem to solve.

Frequently asked questions

What does a whole-home water filter remove?
A whole-home carbon filter reduces chlorine, chloramine taste and odor, and sediment from the water entering your house, so every tap, shower, and appliance gets treated water. It does not remove hardness minerals; that takes a softener.
Do I still need a softener if I get whole-home filtration?
Usually, yes, if you are in San Diego, Orange, or Riverside County. Filtration and softening solve different problems: carbon handles chlorine and taste, while a softener handles the hardness that causes scale. Many homes use both, and some of our systems combine them.
Will whole-home filtration make my drinking water pure?
It improves taste and smell throughout the house, but it is not the same as reverse osmosis. For the cleanest drinking and cooking water, add an RO system at the kitchen sink.
Does it remove chloramine?
Chloramine is harder to remove than plain chlorine. It takes the right carbon media and enough contact time inside the tank, which is why system sizing and media choice matter. We will tell you what fits your home.
How long does installation take?
Most whole-home systems install in about two to three hours. Your water is typically off for only about 45 minutes to an hour, and we protect your floors and clean up when we are done.
How much does whole-home filtration cost?
It depends on the size of your home, your plumbing, and the system you choose, so we give every customer a flat written quote with no surprises. Financing is available, and checking your options takes about 3 to 5 minutes with a soft credit check.
Is a whole-home filter safe for well water?
Well water is different from city water and usually needs testing first. We offer a dual-tank well water system; call us and we will talk through what your water needs.
